Induced abortion in bitches using cabergoline (Galastop®)

The application of substances for termination of unwanted pregnancies is limited, because of their effectiveness on the one hand and their side effects on the other hand Cabergoline, an effective antiprolactin, was shown to be able to induce abortion in the bitch. The aim of the present stimy was, to prove previous experiences with a higher number of animals. Cabergoline (Galastop(R)) was given daily pet-orally to 15 bitches. They were examined daily and blood samples were taken from 7 animals to measure plasma progesterone levels. Medication started in group I between day 40 and 45 of pregnancy, in group 2 on day 35 and 37 resp. In group 1 abortion could be induced in 11 bitches (91,7%), whereas no animal aborted in group 2. Abortion took place after an average time of 5,8 days. Progesterone levels decreased within 3 days to values between 1,3 and 2,4 nmol/l; if the treatment did not succeed, progesterone levels remained clearly higher Vomitus was recognized only in 3 cases out of 15. Our results indicate, that termination of pregnancies with Cabergoline is very effective and safe.
