摘要
Thermally sprayed ceramics, when infiltrated with polymer, exhibit synergistic increases in strength and toughness. The structure of such composites - a dense, brick-mortar arrangement - is strikingly similar to that of nacre, as are the mechanisms underlying the robust mechanical behavior. This industrial-scale process thus presents an exciting tool for biomimetic exploration. © 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
