The gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori sheds outer membrane vesicles (OMV) that possess many of the surface elements of the bacterium. Here we review current knowledge on the composition of H. pylori OMV and discuss evidence for their potential roles in bacterial survival and pathogenesis. (C) 2011 Institut Pasteur.
