Isotope imaging for metastatic thyroid cancer

Many agents are available for imaging patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma and suspected recurrent or persistent disease. These agents include I-131, I-123, (18)FDG, Tc-99m-sestamibi, (201)Thallium, Tc-99m-terofosmin, (111)Indium-octreotide, Tc-99m-pertechnetate, Tc-99m-furifosmin. This article examines the sensitivity and specificity of these imaging agents and proposes an imaging algorithm as an approach to patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Emphasis is focused on two newer imaging modalities,I-123 WBS and (18)FDG-PET.
