A Practical Approach for Ontology Construction through Mapping Process

Current cultural heritage collections may compose of different formats to describe different artifacts. As a result, these collections are difficult to be semantically related or retrieved to support the demand of online applications. Efforts on digital documentation of cultural heritage knowledge that focus on ontology development help to facilitate the organization and retrieval of knowledge. Existing works on ontology development which are mainly done through mapping is concern with either to start the mapping from scratch (manual) or with the aids of tools (automation). This research proposed an approach of semi-automation process for ontology construction. Based on the proposed framework, the core components are identified according to the empirical findings and analysis of the previous works. The work is an early attempt to establish clear and practical guidelines in ontology construction by means of ontology mapping for the community-based e-museum applications.
