摘要
Polyvinyl alcohols (PVAs) are used commonly in cementious tile adhesives (CTAs). The present work reports fundamental data for the impact of PVA on the rheology of Portland cement pastes as a function of the content and molecular weight (M-w) of PVA. The rheology (shear rate vs. shear stress and viscosity vs. shear rate) of cement pastes was measured using a rheometer with coaxial cylinder geometry. The addition of PVA was observed to increase the yield stress, the slope of the shear stress vs. shear rate curve, and the viscosity of cement paste; these effects are enhanced with increasing content and Mw of PVA. PVA-modified cement paste shows (a) shear thinning with increasing shear rate, (b) thixotropy with decreasing shear rate, and (c) permanent hysteresis. These data have practical implications for resistance to the potential slumping and sagging associated with tiles and adhesives.
