Genotype x environment interaction can reduce the progress from selection. There is a need for statistical approaches to genotypic selection utilising the component of stability along with mean performance of genotypes across the environments. Simultaneous selection for yield and stability was applied to a set of twenty sugarcane genotypes under late planted condition. The method (modified from Bajpai and Parbhakaran, 2000) utilised mean performance as well as 'stability variance statistic' (Shukla, 1972) to provide a single value representing both yield and stability and was more flexible than other approaches. These values were plotted against sucrose content to select genotypes under such conditions. The approach Was found superior to 'rank sum method' (Kang, 1993) as well as Eberhart and Russell (1966) model.
