Significantly higher lipid peroxidation (LPO) and lower activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in human erythrocytes were observed with the increasing concentrations of cadmium chloride (CdCl2) treatment. But glutathione reductase (GR) enzyme avtivity increased at lower concentrations of CdCl2 treatment. Pretreatment of antioxidants protected the erythrocytes exposed to CdCl2 against hemolysis and LPO. It is likely that cadmium toxicity is due to its pro-oxidant catalytic activity.
