The last 20 years witnessed an exclusive growth of research in the field of asymmetric synthesis. This review deals with the synthesis and resolution of BINOL, as well as its use as chiral reagent or ligand. First, the different methods of preparation of racemic and enantiopure BINOL and its application as a ligand or chiral auxiliary in enantioselective reduction or oxidation reactions are described. Second, the C-C bond forming reactions, catalyzed or not, involving BINOL as a reagent or ligand are outlined.
