摘要
Mark Catesby's primary role in making "Natural History of Carolina" is undeniable, but to what extent was he involved in creating the map and natural history illustrations? Unlike previous studies comparing different sets of the first edition to identify significant variations among illustrations that might reflect participation of multiple artists, we delve deeply into variations within a single set in the Winterthur Library. Using close visual scrutiny and instrumental pigment analysis to understand Catesby's collaborative process reveals multiple hands in the production of the map, creation of the intaglio copper plates, and coloration of the prints.
