The essay interpretes the motif of virtue in Nietzsche's book Thus spoke Zarathustra as being in dialogue, since the theme of giving and receiving is identified to be at the core of the book. The motif of virtue is linked to the motif of giving and receiving, pointing to the conception of virtue as being in dialogue. On one hand, this means abandoning the idea of virtue as an exalted autonomy in the sense of being-from-self and on the other hand it means striving for a synthetic understanding of virtue such that the autonomy of one's own will is united with the receptivity which lets things come into themselves. This understanding of virtue raises a question: what is the nature of such unity and what ground is it built on? The essay works with the motif of speech as a leading clue towards a deeper understanding of the theme of virtue.
