Hydration status of indoor cycling practitioners subjected to education actions

The cycling practice improves cardiorespiratory and anaerobic conditioning. Because of high energy expenditure, this modality has been practiced mostly by individuals who are overweight. However, during a practice, a significant increase in sweating is observed, which can lead to dehydration. This study aimed to assess the hydration status of indoor cycling practioners subjected to hydration education actions. Fifteen subjects participated in the study (weight=79.75 +/- 18.76kg, height=1.68 +/- 0.11m, BMI=28.01 +/- 4.43kg / m(2), BF=31 +/- 8.35%). Sweating rate (SR), fluid intake, dehydration (%), and fluid replacement rate (FRR) were determined in two training sessions. After the first assessment of the hydration status (training 1 = control), the subjects underwent educational actions on hydration for five weeks. After that period, training 2 was carried out to assess the effects of education actions on hydration parameters. During training, the subjects received water ad libitum. There was no significant change in the sweating rate (Before = 810.6mL / h vs After= 742.2mL / h), total fluids ingested (Before= 588.4mL / h vs After = 626.8mL / h), dehydration (Before= -0.14% vs After= -0.05%) and TRL (Before= 72.80% vs After= 85.10%) after the education actions. The wide variations observed in the hydration parameters reinforce the recommendation of an individual approach to achieving adequate fluid replacement during physical exercise. These data suggest that the participants had a low fluid loss and that the educational actions were not sufficient to improve the hydration status of indoor cycling practitioners.
