Modeling of semi-rigid composite joints

The behaviour of composite structures with semi-rigid joint connections remains a vibrant research topic. Based on Eurocode 3 and BS5950 Part3, a simple but effective semi-rigid composite joint model is established characterizing end plate type of connection. Based upon simple bar and beam elements the analysis may be run under basic computer programs. The proposed model is validated against two series of existing joint tests carried out by Brown & Anderson (2001) and Anderson & Najafi (1994), respectively. The predicted moment-rotation curves from the proposed composite joint model show good agreement with the tests. The predictions of the moment resistance, rotation capacity and initial stiffness are satisfactory. It is concluded that the proposed model can be used in the analysis of semi-rigid composite joints. For further study, the proposed model can be used in the analysis of composite beams and the combined joint and beam proposals can then be used to analyze composite frames.
