Quality of life in nursing-home residents: an intervention study of the effect of mental stimulation through an audiovisual programme

Objective: to create a model for improving the quality of life of nursing-home residents, Design: a controlled randomized study. Setting: a suburban nursing home in Stockholm, Intervention: mental stimulation by audiovisual means. Subjects: residents with mild mental impairment who had lived in the nursing home for at least 6 months. Outcome measures: quality of life was measured by the Nottingham Health Profile, Results: the quality of life increased in the intervention groups compared with the control group. Conclusion: audiovisual stimulation had a great impact on the quality of life of chronically ill elderly nursing-home residents.
