An Ultra-Wideband (UWB) planar monopole antenna with a switchable band-notched response is presented. In order to achieve a band-rejection, a U-shaped slot is embedded in the radiating patch. The operation of the U-shaped slot is controlled by a PIN diode. Measurement and simulation results revealed a minor effect of the lumped components loading on the radiation pattern of the antenna. The main emphasis of the work has gone into simplification and validation of the presented switchable band-notching technique, which has a potential for further antenna miniaturization using RF MEMS technology.
