Injection of outer-belt relativistic electrons by substorms

摘要
We have investigated strong enhancements of MeV electrons during the recovery phase of magnetic storms, in terms of the substorm-associated acceleration of energetic plasma sheet electrons. The study is based on tracing test particles in three-dimensional MI-ID simulations of substorm dipolarization. Estimation of the number of accelerated plasma sheet electrons for a moderate size of substorm indicated that a series of substorms, some of them large, might produce a large enough enhancement.
