Impact Properties of Nanocrystalline and Ultra-fine Grained Metals and Alloys

Nanocrystalline (nc) and ultra-fine grained (UFG) metals and alloys show mechanical properties quite different from the properties of their polycrystalline counterparts. Although their hardness and tensile properties have been widely studied, data regarding their Charpy impact energy are limited mainly due to the unavailability of samples with appropriate size to carry out such tests. In this paper, the impact properties of nc Ti and UFG Al-11%wt Si alloy, as well as nc cobalt will be discussed. While microstructural refinement in Al-11%wt Si alloy resulted in improved impact properties, grain size reduction in cobalt resulted in increased hardness but reduced impact properties. For Ti, the effect of grain size on the impact properties remains somewhat inconclusive.
