Thermal behaviors of alpha -disubstituted oligothiophenes were investigated. 5,5"-Dicyanoterthiophene having thiophene rings as the rigid core exhibited a nematic liquid crystalline phase at 205 degreesC on cooling. It should be emphasized that this molecule lacks in a flexible substituent such as a long alkyl chain.
