Novel design of pressure swing adsorption using compact plates for adsorption heat recuperation of CO2 capture in biomethane upgrading process

The performance of the novel plate PSA and conventional PSA designs in CO2 capture and removal from biogas mixture was investigated. The novel PSA design employed compact plates to transfer the heat generated during CO2 capture to the desorption process to ensure more efficient heat dissipation from the adsorption bed and reduction in the energy needed for regeneration step. Composite model was developed and validated using experimental data by interlinking Aspen Adsorption and Aspen EDR to emulate the temperature profile of adsorption bed and calculate the heat of adsorption. Results from the study show that higher bioCH4 purity of 97.78 % and recovery of 82.54 % was recorded for the novel plate PSA than the bioCH4 purity and recovery from the conventional PSA of 93.0 % and 79.3 %, respectively. The heat released by CO2 during adsorption was 18.915 kJ/mol. About 78 % of the heat was recuperated to improve the purity and recovery of the captured CO2 to 54.08 and 98.33 %, respectively.
