This special issue assesses a range of works, from U.S. silent cinema to transnational web series, that configure romance in politically and representationally radical ways. In resisting the genre's romanticizing tendencies, while also defying its perception as escapist "chick flicks," these works subvert rom-com fantasy and formula and reflect critically on the realities and complexities of intimacy.
