The history of psychiatry provides a focal point for social scientists and mental health workers, and there have been a substantial number of monographs published on the history of psychosurgery in the USA, a history of the Bethlem Royal Hospital and a general study of the development of psychiatric ideas and institutions, as well as important articles in the field of historical psychopathology and biological treatments within psychiatry.
