The Study of Backup Routing in Ad Hoc Networks

Backup Routing plays an important role on maintaining the stable of network system, improving the transmission rate of data packets and decreasing the delay in MANET. Based on the routing reply (RREP) message, this paper presented a backup routing protocol---BRP. When a node receives multiple copies of the RREP packet to the same destination node, the node does not simply discard the packets coming back as AODV, but to store them in its backup routing table for later use. When a node detects a link broken, the first thing is to check its own backup routing table to judge if there is a backup routing item to the destination node or not, if no corresponding item, then drops it, if met, according to local repair process to repair the broken link. By simulating AODV and BRP, the results show that BRP has a lower routing load, delay and loss ratio than AODV's.
