Amniotic membrane transplantation is widely used in human and veterinary ophthalmology. Amnion is an avascular, thin but strong tissue, with more properties useful for the ocular surface reconstruction: it has antiangiogenic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiprotease and antifibrotic properties and it contains growth factors. For these reasons amniotic membrane is used to replace diseased or excised corneal tissue or to promote corneal wound healing. Amniotic membrane can optimize corneal transparency and minimize cicatricial fibrosis. The objective of this retrospective study is to describe the use of amniotic membrane transplantation in 9 horses with different corneal diseases.
