Oxidation-migration cycle in polypropylene-based nanocomposites

Effect of oxidation on the structure of polypropylene- (PP) based nanocomposites, and the additional results on the effect of oxygen during annealing of maleic anhydride (MA) grafted PP were investigated. Effects of two structure modifier were studied simultaneously, one of the grafted MA and the other of the oxygen. The effects of increasing concentration of air up to 100% of the purging gas were studied on pristine PP without any other compatibilizers. Preparation of the samples, annealing experiments, regulation of the composition of the purging gas, extent of migration and concentration of carbonyl group, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were carried out. Experimental investigation suggested a mechanism by which oxidative annealing of polymer organically layered silicate nanocomposites bring about the migration of exfoliated platelets to the surface.
