To understand fully how cells function, we must elucidate how intracellular organization is generated and maintained by the cytoskeleton. The past year has seen great progress towards this goal. In constructing this issue of reviews, we attempted to capture important advances in three arenas: one, mechanisms of methanochemical force transduction; two, principles used by cytoskeletal structural proteins to support intracellular movement and organization; three, how cytoskeletal dynamics and motor proteins are harnessed to generate intracellular movement and order.
