SiC platelet reinforced alumina composites

Homogeneous SiC-platelets/Al2O3-powders mixtures, with platelet contents ranging from 0 to 30 vol%, have been prepared by instantaneous flocculation of stable suspensions. The sintering behaviour of the Al2O3/SiCpl compacts have been comparatively investigated using different sintering routes, i.e. hot pressing, gas pressure sintering and pressureless sintering. The mechanical properties (hardness. Young's modulus, structure toughness and flexural strength) of the composites obtained by hot pressing have been determined at room temperature. The wear behaviour has been studied using a bloch on cylinder tribotester on metal/ceramic couples. Sample microstructures as well as friction tracks have been analyzed by optical and scanning electron microscopy.
