Transition metals and their compounds arc known to cause serious problems due to their accumulation and toxicity in living organisms. Cadmium is one of the most widespread environmental and occupational pollutants. The effect of chronic cadmium exposure on parameters of antioxidant status was investigated in rats. A daily administration of cadmium in dose LD50 of CdCl2 for 90 days significantly decreased of plasma total antioxidant status, the concentration of vitamin E and uric acid. The concentration of vitamin C was increased non-significantly. The plasma level of zinc was significantly increased in male and female of Wistar albino rats These results show that chronic cadmium intoxication has an unfavourable effect on antioxidant status in rats caused consumption of extracellular antioxidants.
