We report photoredox catalysis of a visible-light-responsive divacant lacunary silicotungstate TBA(4)H(4)[gamma-SiW10O36] (I, TBA: tetra-n-butylammonium) for the selective reduction of aldehydes. In particular, the catalytic activity of I was significantly enhanced by controlling the redox potential by deprotonation using TBAOH. The reduction of various aromatic aldehydes selectively proceeded to afford the corresponding alcohols using ethanol as the reducing agent by photoirradiation (lambda > 385 nm).
