Berthollet presented his chemical theory in his main work entitled Essai de statique chimique, which was published in 1803. He introduced the notion of chemical equilibrium and incomplete reaction and he exposed the factors that have an influence on this equilibrium. Berthollet's chemical theory was at odds with the other conceptions of the chemical phenomena and their interpretation of the time. The concept of chemical equilibrium that he introduced is also at odds with the one shared by chemists today. The historical course we are presenting attends to study the differents steps that helped building the concept of chemical equilibrium.
