Skeletal pathologies in the giant ground sloth Eremotherium laurillardi (Xenarthra, Folivora): New cases from the Late Pleistocene of Brazil

摘要：

We conducted a paleopathological study in 230 fossil specimens that were collected and prepared by Ney Vidal (renowned Brazilian paleontologist) during the 1940s and 50s. These fossils were housed at the Collection of Vertebrate Paleontology of Museu Nacional of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (MN/UFRJ), which were tragically lost in the fire that destroyed the Museu Nacional on September 2nd, 2018. Four isolated specimens assigned to Eremotherium laurillardi exhibited pathological alterations (1.9%), diagnosed as spondy-loarthropathy (inflammatory arthritis) and linear defect (a type of vertebral endplate defect). Spondyloarthr-opathy has been often diagnosed in Late Pleistocene glyptodonts and giant ground sloths, but this is the first report of linear defect for any species of Xenarthra.
