The basic optical and electrical properties of turpentine, a biologically active natural organic compound, are studied. At wavelengths from 350 to 550 nm, the room-temperature photoluminescence spectrum of turpentine shows a number of peaks. In the temperature range 280-300 K, the activation energy of conduction is found to be 0.53 eV, which is much lower than the optical bandgap and indicates the hopping mechanism of conduction with a variable length of hops between states near the Fermi level.
