Magnetite-embedded poly (2-methylaniline) hybrid particles and their smart responses under magnetic and electric fields

摘要
In this study, Fe3O4-poly(2-methylaniline) smart hybrid particles were synthesized using a Shirasu porous glass membrane process, and their dual responses under an electrical or magnetic field as an electro/magneto-rheological (E/MR) fluid was investigated. The synthesized particles possessed sizes in the micron range, good sedimentation stability, and a relatively low density, along with extensive application prospects. Morphology and chemical formation of the synthesized particles were examined using TEM, XRD, and FT-IR spectroscopy. Optical images of chain formation in the presence of magnetic or electric fields were obtained using optical microscopy. An E/MR fluid composed of the synthesized particles in silicone oil was evaluated using a rheometer under enhanced electrical and magnetic field strengths, and it showed typical E/MR fluid behavior.
