摘要
America is an immigrant country, it is known as admitting a large number of people who are unwilling or can't get back to their homeland. The experience of the immigrant family has been a significant concern of American diasporic literature since last century. My Antonia, Typical American and Middlesex are three works which reflect the differences in ethnic backgrounds, religious and cultural traditions, which are also studies chronologically to consider the changes in immigrant families brought on by the culture shock of immigrating to American. While the idea of identity is in itself problematic in a post-modern, non-canonical universe, with questions being raised as to what exactly identity means and how valid the concept is in a word where centricity of any kind no longer makes the grade. When you refer to that immigrant family that includes not merely the inevitable differences in age, but also a radical difference in the understanding of the culture within the adopted country, the results can often be incendiary. In America immigrant families seems to have a special opportunity not only in the history but also in the realm of literature. They are often given the chance to revalue their believes. Family members must inevitably adapt to new roles which are different from previous ones. According to Olson, "Few families were immune from change. The democratization and shrinkage of the family, the separation of work and home, the compulsory education of children, and the cult of individualism in the United States took their toll on all of the immigrants"[1] In spite of many outward differences, immigrant families have much in common, which is that they share the ability to understand American from afar.
