Kinetics of the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide on tin, zinc, and their alloys are studied. The Tafel dependences obtained suggest that the process involves two stages: (a) electrochemical discharge of ions of an alkali metal present in the supporting electrolyte, which forms an intermetallic compound with the cathode material, and (b) subsequent chemical interaction of the compound with carbon dioxide, The scheme proposed for the process explains why the reduction rate depends on the electrode material.
