摘要
For the compilers of the Rgveda Aryas were tribesmen participating in Vedic rituals. At the beginning of A.D. the same word could mean the whole Hindu society (i.e. members of caturvarnya). For a Buddhist "aryan" would be everything connected with his religion. But in the classical works of Sanskrit literature the word "arya" indicates rather a contrast between culture and barbarity than any ethno-linguistic or confessional differences.
