Structure, superconductivity and thermopower of Nd1-xPrxSrBaCu3O7

We report on the preparation, X-ray diffraction, ac susceptibility and thermopower (S) of Nd1-xPrxSrBaCu3O7 (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.5). Two sets of samples were studied: synthesised in air and annealed in oxygen [AO] and heated in argon followed by annealing in oxygen [AO]. Superconductivity was suppressed for x greater than or equal to 0.5 whatever be the heat treatment, though for x < 0.5, the T-c values of the samples [AO] were higher. The thermopower data show all samples are underdoped compared to YBa2Cu3O7 and the hole density decreases as x(Pr) increases. Two samples, Nd0.7Pr0.3Ba1.85Sr0.15Cu3O7 and Nd0.7Pr0.3Ba0.5Sr0.5Cu3O7 that were annealed in high pressure oxygen (200 bar) showed an increase of T-c from 0 to 29 and from 26 to 35 K respectively. The influence of chain oxygen defects on T-c is pointed out.
