摘要
Cermet tools are used to mill stainless steel 3Cr13Cu (44HRC) for studying tool failure modes and the influence of the serrated chip formation on tool wear. Crack and peeling are identified to be the main failure modes of the cermet tool as they form mechanical fatigue cracks and thermal cracks in a cutting process. At lower cutting speeds, the mechanical fatigue crack is produced earlier than the thermal crack at the tool rake face, while at higher cutting speeds, it is the thermal crack that was generated earlier at the tool rake face. The experiments demonstrate that the boundary wear and the serrated chip formation of cermet tools are closely related with the mechanical fatigue crack formation.
