A novel desulfurization process was developed using hydroxylferric oxide as the adsorbent and slurry bed as the reactor. The H2S removal performance and cycling behaviors of the adsorbent were investigated at low temperature. The structural properties of the adsorbent in the desulfurization and regeneration process were characterized, and the mechanism of regeneration was also proposed. The synthesized adsorbent exhibited excellent H2S adsorption capacity in a slurry bed, and the sulfur capacity of the regenerated adsorbent remained over 93%. The adsorption process conformed to the shrinkage core model. The formation of elemental sulfur and sulfuric acid was observed during regeneration, contributing to the lower H2S removal efficiency. The adsorption reaction was mainly carried out by the exchange of sulfur anions for oxygen, and this study illustrated the feasibility of the slurry reactor in the research of desulfurization and regeneration.
