摘要
Introduction: Lupeol, piperine and beta sitosterol are all natural plant sources that are obtained from white cabbage, black pepper and soybeans respectively. They are all individually proven to have antioxidant properties. Oxidation is a process by which free radicals are released and this occurs naturally in the human body. These free radicals initiate a chain of reactions which causes cell damage and ultimately death. Antioxidants are those compounds that scavenge these free radicals, thereby preventing the chain of reactions. Aim: The aim of this research is to comparatively evaluate the antioxidant properties of three natural anti diabetic compounds such as lupeol, piperine and beta sitosterol. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out in vitro condition and the antioxidant properties were studied by DPPH free radical scavenging assay . The data were analyzed statistically using one way-ANOVA followed by Duncan"s multiple range test was used to see the statistical significance among the groups. P value of less than 0.05 was considered to be significant. Results: The results have shown that the lupeol, piperine and beta sitosterol showed a significant increase in the inhibition of DPPH radical formation in a dose dependent manner with concentrations ranging from 100 to 500 mu g/ml. All the three compounds showed similar efficacy in the antioxidant properties. Conclusion: It can be concluded that since the three compounds have similar antioxidant properties, they can be combined in one single drug that might have a synergic effect.
