摘要
The visual truths about the otherness of Eastern Europe formulated through illustrations in travel literature differ from those conveyed by accompanying texts. From seventeenth -century prints to reportage photography in National Geographic, the images continuously foreground images of mountains and locals in folk costumes. Emphasizing inaccessible terrain and ethnic otherness, the images absorb new meanings when adapted to formulas of regional countries' self-representations. The article elaborates on the chapter "The Lure of the Ethnic Dress: Eastern Europe in the Traveller's Gaze" from Murawska-Muthesius's Imaging and Mapping Eastern Europe: Sarmatia Europea to the Communist Bloc, Routledge: New York, 2021. The book includes full bibliography.
