A Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) is one of the candidates for rare-earth-free-motors for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). An SRM has previously been designed to be competitive to an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) dimensions, the maximum torque, an operation area, and maximum efficiency. However, the acoustic noise problem was remained as a problem. Generally acoustic noise is one of the serious problems of SRMs. In this paper, an estimation and reduction of the stator displacement caused by the radial force is carried out. It is shown that an increase in the number of poles helps to decrease the peak radial forces. Comparisons of the 18/12 pole and 24/16 pole test machines are presented.
