A possibility of applying a compact optical diagnostics to nuclear systems, such as detecting high energy neutrons and ions in a nuclear fusion system and measuring a high-flux gamma-ray in a fission reactor with a wide dynamic range at elevated temperatures, has been studied, utilizing radiation resistant optical fibers and radioluminescence (radiation-induced luminescence) materials. Appropriate radioulminescence materials were found for dosimetry of each radiation field, namely, gamma-rays and ions, and neutrons. The proposed optical system will be a strong candidate for advanced radiation detection systems in advanced nuclear systems such as a high temperature gas cooled reactor and a nuclear fusion reactor, as well as conventional and advanced water-cooled power-generating fission reactors.
