Cellular changes of the endocytobiont, i.e., the yeast-like symbiote (YLS), in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stal), after treating with high temperatures at 32 degrees C or 35 degrees C, were studied by using electron microscopy. Scanning electron micrographs showed distortion of the endocytobiont cell wall, forming abnormal shape after incubating at high temperatures. The major cellular changes in YLS under high temperatures were found to be disintegration of cell wall, degeneration of nucleus, and loss of cytoplasm as observed by transmission electron microscopy.
