Researchers have discovered a category of metallic glass that shows a high toughness against fracture and establishes metallic glasses as materials with the highest known damage tolerance. The composition of the new metallic glass is composed of Pd79Ag3.5P6Si9.5Ge 2 and can be cast as fully glassy rods up to 6 mm in diameter. characterization of such behavior is in terms of fracture toughness that scales with the maximum load that can be applied before fracture occurs. The researchers used a well-tried approach based on measuring the crack-tip opening displacement as a measure for tough materials available in limited cross-sections. Their estimate of fracture toughness roughly doubled than that of any earlier reported for a metallic glass and was comparable with the highest values for any material.
