Effect of mean stress on cyclic stress-strain response of copper single crystals

Copper single crystals oriented for single slip were cyclically loaded under load control with a non-zero mean stress. Contrary to symmetrical strain controlled tests there is no plateau at the cyclic stress-strain plot and there are no persistent slip bands in the dislocation structure. The microcracks initiate - as in case of symmetrical cycling - at the surface coarse slip markings having a sharp notch-peak topography. This leads to the conclusion that the persistent slip bands do not always play the crucial role in the initiation of fatigue microcracks.
