Improvement of corrosion fatigue limit of steam turbine blades

The experimental conditions used to determine the fatigue- corrosion behaviour of alloyed steels are defined from the experience acquired at GERM. Solutions for improving the endurance limit in the fatigue-corrosion of steam turbine blades made on 12 % Cr steel are estimated : protective coating (Ni electrolytic deposit, sacrificial coating), shot peening, the use of 25 % Cr steel. Shot peening of the 12 % Cr steel makes it possible to increase the endurance limit in low aggressive environments (water and water + NaCl). The coatings studied do not improve the fatigue-corrosion behaviour. 25 % Cr steel may be an interesting solution for corrosive environments.
