Leaching of soluble components from fertilizers based on sewage sludge and ashes

This research examines the susceptibility to leaching of soluble components from ash-sludge pellets obtained from municipal sewage sludge and fly ash from brown coal. Pellets are often used as fertiliser; therefore, they were enriched with potassium using potassium chloride and sulphate at 450 g of potassium per kg dry weight of pellets. Susceptibility to leaching of soluble components in water was examined using 1- and 3-step tests. Results from both leaching tests show that the most polluted load was leached from pellets with added K2SO4, and the least polluted from unmodified pellets. The total level of leached pollutants from pellets determined using the 3-step test was much higher than that determined using the 1-step test.
