We have used the Medipix 1 detector for computed tomography. Medipix 1 is a single photon counting hybrid detector with the ability to discriminate the incident photons by their energy. With our automated experimental setup data sets from which CT images are reconstructed via an implementation of the Shepp-Logan algorithm can be acquired. Images from artificial phantoms of 8 and 25 mm in diameter are presented, the latter ones could be acquired by imitating a larger detector with the experimental setup. Apart from those conventional CT images results of measurements are presented, which use the energy threshold of the Medipix 1 to measure the mass absorption coefficient with respect to the photon energy. This might lead to additional information in medical diagnostics in the future. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
