摘要
The objective of this project was to develop a process for improving the bond characteristics of thermal spray coatings. The method under study here is laser surface glazing. Thermal spray coatings in this case are used to impart a wear resistant surface on stainless steel substrates. For this study, chrome-carbide coatings on stainless steel were evaluated. The as-sprayed chrome-carbide coatings do not form a metallurgical bond, and are therefore susceptible to impact damage and delamination. After laser glazing the sprayed coating, a metallurgical bond is generated producing a more robust surface. The resultant hardness of the laser-glazed surface was greater than the as-sprayed coating.
