摘要
Sugarcane is a high value cash crop in Pakistan, and the country is currently the fifth largest producer in the world. It produces about 67 million tonnes of cane annually. This paper provides a review of development in sugarcane breeding, germplasm development and related biotechnology research in Pakistan. Variety development to date has largely focused on selection based on imported seeds and clones. This has been successful, but further improvements are needed. In this review, different breeding strategies applied by research institutes and sugar mills are described, including the history and the current methodology of breeding programs, as well as major activities in germplasm development done so far at national and international levels. It is concluded that full-scale breeding work should be established for development of new sugarcane varieties for sugar and other products of economic importance at lower cost than the existing commercial varieties.
